Ohio State wins second straight Blood Battle over Michigan

This is the second straight year Ohio State beat Michigan in the Blood Battle.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State University defeated the University of Michigan in the 42nd annual “Blood Battle.”

Ahead of The Game each year, rival schools Ohio State and Michigan compete to donate blood for local patients. 

This year, Ohio State collected 1,721 pints of blood while Michigan collected 1,469.

The competition started on Oct. 25 and ended Friday. This is the second straight year Ohio State beat Michigan.

All blood collected by Ohio State directly benefits patients coming to Wexner Medical Center for traumatic injuries, cancer treatment, organ transplant recipients and other medical conditions.  

All donors were gifted a T-shirt, a $5 Roosters gift card and they were also entered to win Ohio State football tickets.

“We are so proud of our Ohio State and central Ohio communities, coming together to play a role in this friendly off-the-field competition,” said Dr. Naeem Ali, medical director, University Hospital and director of critical care clinical operations at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center. “The selfless act by so many donors has the potential to make a lifesaving impact for thousands of our patients.”

  • One blood donation can save up to three lives.
  • Every two seconds, someone needs lifesaving blood.
  • 75% of the population will need blood at some point in their lives. 
  • Blood donation appointments take less than one hour to complete.
