143 Health Science Center faculty past and present recognized on Scopus citation metrics list – UT Health San Antonio

Faculty members of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio are well represented in a newly published worldwide list of the top 2% of scientists based on Scopus citation metrics. Scopus is a large, commercially produced, multidisciplinary database of peer-reviewed literature from scientific journals, books and conference proceedings.

Eighty-one present or former faculty clinicians of the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine are honored on the list. Some of these study authors began their careers in the 1960s and have had their publications cited for half a century. “This is a testament to the enduring and impactful research discoveries that have emanated from the Long School of Medicine since its inception,” said Robert Hromas, MD, FACP, school of medicine dean.

The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences has 45 basic scientists in the ranking. “These researchers, past and present, have consistently had seminal studies published in top-notch journals with high impact factors,” said David Weiss, PhD, graduate school dean.

The School of Dentistry has 15 dental researchers listed. “Among U.S. dental schools, the School of Dentistry has held a strong research reputation for decades, as evidenced by the discoveries and innovations produced here,” said the school’s dean, Peter Loomer, DDS, PhD, MBA, BSc, MRCD(C), FACD.

The School of Nursing and School of Health Professions have one honoree apiece.

“Citations are an indicator of productivity and impact,” said Jennifer Sharpe Potter, PhD, MPH, vice president for research. “The UT Health Science Center at San Antonio has led groundbreaking research investigations that have impacted thinking among scientists in various fields and that have enhanced life sciences literature.”

Below is a list of UT Health Science Center San Antonio researchers ranked on the 2023 worldwide list of the top 2% of scientists based on Scopus citation metrics.
